Eugene Portman was born in Barnsley, South Yorkshire and started playing the piano at a very early age. He studied classicaly but had a longing to be a jazz pianist. He now lives in Surrey and and travels all over the UK as both a solo performer and as a combo player for weddings and events. Eugene has made a name for himself for producing a type of jazz that is easy to listen to and not ultra modern.
Eugene’s music is easy to listen to, whatever combination he is playing in. His main influences have been any jazz pianists such as: Oscar Peterson, George Shearing, Erroll Garner or Dudley Moore. Other musical influences have been Ben Webster, Stan Getz, Ella Fitzgerald, and Jimmy Smith. Eugene playing tends not to be too high-brow, but sits comfortably in any event, party or wedding. He plays all the great jazz standards that you would expect but he usually finds different ways of playing them.
Although his main speciality is jazz – he is equally adept at playing other styles of music such as pop, rock, latin, boogie-woogie, blues, classical and even sing-along.
There has been a recent trend to hire Eugene for ‘Pie and Mash’ evening and other ‘Cockney themed events. He dresses in attire that suits the theme and plays all the old sing-along favourites. He supplies all the song sheets so that all you have to do is make sure that you have some good hearty voices amongst your guests.
